ATA Engineering Femap, NX, Simcenter 3DOverview of Product Updates and Licensing Options3. Licensing OptionsLicenses are generally configured for network or node-locked use and can beissued on a perpetual or subscription basis. ATA is happy to help you considerwhich license and configuration options are best suited to your current and longterm situation.3.1.Floating vs. Node-LockedSoftware licenses can be categorized as either floating or node-lockeddepending on where they can be used: Floating licenses are typically more expensive, but they allow anyoneon the network to use the licensed product, up to the number of usersspecified in the license file. Node-locked licenses limit software usage to an individual node. NXand Simcenter 3D typically tie a node-locked license to an individualcomputer’s MAC address. Femap typically ties node-locked licenses toa USB dongle, which can be transferred between computers. Note thatFemap, NX, and Simcenter 3D cannot be accessed through a remotedesktop application when a node-locked license is used.License files can contain a mix of node-locked and floating licenses, with thenode-locked features available on the specified machines and the floatingfeatures available to anyone with network access.3.1.1.Changing License Type in FemapFemap users can change their licensing method using batch files located in thetop Femap directory (e.g., C:\Siemens\FEMAPv1201): go demo.bat converts your licensing method to the Femap Node-LimitedDemonstration version. go dongle.bat converts your licensing method to use a security key. go network.bat converts your licensing method to the floating/networkconfiguration. go subscription.bat converts your licensing method to the online/web subscription configuration. Note that unlike the other files, gosubscription.bat is located inside the subscription subfolder, e.g., C:\Siemens\FEMAPv1201\subscription.Simply double-click the batch file to run. Note that Femap and NX Nastranshould be closed before these tools are run.8Content subject to change without notice. 2019 ATA Engineering, Inc.Femap, NX, and Simcenter 3D are trademarks of Siemens PLM Software, Inc.

ATA Engineering Femap, NX, Simcenter 3DOverview of Product Updates and Licensing Options3.1.2.Changing License Types in NX and Simcenter 3DUnlike Femap, batch files are not required to change licensing methods in NXor Simcenter 3D. Instead, floating or node-locked licensing is determined bywhether a license server or license file is specified on the NX Server registry keyor the SPLM LICENSE SERVER environment variable, with the registry key takingprecedence. See section 4.3.2 for more details.3.2.Perpetual, Rental, and Subscription LicensesSoftware has traditionally been available through either perpetual licenses,short-term rentals, or subscriptions: Perpetual licenses have the highest upfront cost but are by far the lowestpriced option over the long run. In addition to the initial license cost, userstypically choose to maximize their investment by paying an annual fee tocover maintenance, enhancements, and support (ME&S, or maintenance). This allows users to receive regular software updates that provide newfeatures and bug fixes and to enjoy continued access to ATA’s technicalsupport services. Users who end their maintenance still have access totheir software, albeit without the ability to upgrade to newer productreleases. Rental licenses come with a three-month minimum duration and are onlycost-effective for finite, short-term periods. This is the most expensiveoption over the long run, although credit toward a perpetual license isavailable for users who decide to purchase after the rental term. Subscriptions have the lowest entry cost for a twelve-month minimumterm, but the costs break even with perpetual plus maintenance licenseswithin the first few years. Subscription licenses provide no residual value.3.3.Online Subscription LicensesSiemens PLM Software products are becoming increasingly available as monthlyor annual subscriptions through their online store. Available configurationoptions can be limited and vary by product. However, subscription-basedlicensing offers a low entry cost, the ability to quickly scale licenses up or downdepending on current demand, and the flexibility to pay as you go.3.3.1.Femap Online SubscriptionsMonthly and annual subscriptions are available for Femap in five popularconfigurations: Femap stand-alone Femap with Simcenter Nastran Femap with Simcenter Nastran and Dynamic Response9Content subject to change without notice. 2019 ATA Engineering, Inc.Femap, NX, and Simcenter 3D are trademarks of Siemens PLM Software, Inc.

Desktop Extensionremoves checksum control, allowing the user to manually edit input files and runthe analysis independently of Femap.Visit ATA’s page on the Siemens PLM web store for pricing and additionalinformation.Femap’s subscription version is identical to the equivalent perpetual version, andfiles can be easily shared between users with different license configurations.Femap monthly online subscriptions are node-locked by MAC address.3.3.2.NX Cloud Connected ProductsNX Cloud Connected Products are available as monthly or annual subscriptionsand come in five configurations: NX Cloud Connected – Core Designer NX Cloud Connected – Advanced Designer NX Cloud Connected – Mold Designer NX Cloud Connected – Scan to Part NX Cloud Connected – Drafting & LayoutThese configurations utilize a local install of software with the license managed inthe cloud. Core Designer includes solid part modeling and assembly modeling, plus sheet-metal design, freeform modeling, and convergent modeling.Advanced Designer and Mold Designer add more advanced design tools andstreamline the entire mold development process, while Scan to Part bringspowerful reverse engineering tools, and Drafting & Layout offer tools for creatingengineering drawings and design layouts.Visit the Siemens PLM web store for additional information and contact ATA withany questions.3.3.3.Simcenter on the CloudSiemens offers the following simulation solutions through the Rescale platform: Simcenter 3D Simcenter Nastran Simcenter STAR-CCM Simcenter Aimsim10Content subject to change without notice. 2019 ATA Engineering, Inc.Femap, NX, and Simcenter 3D are trademarks of Siemens PLM Software, Inc.

Visit theSiemens PLM web store for additional information and contact ATA with anyquestions.3.4.Value-Based Licensing for NX and Simcenter 3DValue-based (token) licensing for NX CAD and Simcenter 3D allows users to runany combination of token-enabled applications, provided enough tokens areavailable. This gives users access to various applications without buying thecorresponding add-on modules, making it cost-effective for customers who needto access a variety of capabilities and offering flexibility to try new capabilitiesand accommodate changes in capability usage over time. Value-based licensingcan be easily combined with traditional module-based license configurations, with module-based licenses being checked out before tokens are used whenavailable. Value-based licensing operates using the same Flex license serveras module-based licenses. Tokens are not consumed; when a user exits NX orSimcenter 3D, the tokens are released back to the pool for others to use. Notethat separate token pools are used for NX CAD and Simcenter 3D applications,e.g., NX tokens could not be used to run Simcenter Nastran. Many NX add-on modules can be licensed through the token pool, includingMechatronics Concept Designer (MCD), Advanced Sheet Metal, Molded PartValidation, NX Realize Shape, Weld Assistant, Human modeling, Routing, translators, and more. A Mach 1 floating license or higher is required as the baseseat, and after that, each additional application checks out a defined numberof tokens. NX CAD tokens are only available on a subscription basis and aresupported for NX 1872 (Summer 2019) and later. Most Simcenter 3D and Simcenter Nastran products are available through tokenlicensing, including various solver environments, Simcenter Thermal/Flow,modeling add-ons, solutions like Simcenter Durability and Response Dynamics,Simcenter Motion, and Simcenter Flexible Pipe. A base seat of Simcenter 3Dis required, and after that, each additional application checks out a definednumber of tokens. Simcenter 3D tokens can be obtained on a perpetual, rental,or subscription basis and are supported for Simcenter 3D v11 and higher.3.5.License File FormatA license file is a text file containing information like server names, hostidentifiers, and licensed features with “\” used as a continuation character.SERVER lines identify the node name and host ID of the license server and theport number of the license manager daemon. There may be multiple SERVERlines for redundant server configurations or no SERVER lines for stand-alonenode-locked license files. The VENDOR line specifies the name of the vendordaemon supported by the license file.11Content subject to change without notice. 2019 ATA Engineering, Inc.Femap, NX, and Simcenter 3D are trademarks of Siemens PLM Software, Inc.

ATA Engineering Femap, NX, Simcenter 3DOverview of Product Updates and Licensing OptionsPACKAGE lines are used to license a product suite to enforce bundles in someproducts and as a more efficient way to distribute a license file with a largenumber of features sharing the same INCREMENT / FEATURE line arguments. The PACKAGE line doesn’t license anything by itself but instead requires amatching INCREMENT / FEATURE line to license the entire package.Figure 3-1: Excerpt from the Siemens PLM LicensingUser Guide describing the parts of anINCREMENT line.In general, license files should not be edited, with the exception of hostnameson the SERVER line(s), port numbers on the SERVER line(s), and user info onINCREMENT / FEATURE line(s). If the hostname is not supplied when a licensefile is requested, a placeholder will be used and should be replaced with thereal hostname. The proper hostname and port number value are used on theclient side for setting the server setting to [email protected] The user info field inan INCREMENT / FEATURE line displays a descriptive name for the bundle andshould not exceed twenty characters, use special characters such as quotes, orcontain a continuation character.3.6.Licensing User GuideFor additional details on license formats, configurations, and administration, visitthe Siemens PLM Licensing User Guide, located on the GTAC Downloads pageunder Siemens PLM Licensing Product Updates Documentation.12Content subject to change without notice. 2019 ATA Engineering, Inc.Femap, NX, and Simcenter 3D are trademarks of Siemens PLM Software, Inc.
