ADERCO L 1050 –LUBRICITY IMPROVEMENT ADDITIVEPoor lubricity is an inherent property associated with certain lightdensity and low viscosity fuels – for example naphtha, kerosene andgas condensates. Recently, the introduction of Ultra Low SulphurDistillate marine fuels has raised again the issue, especially for fuelsbelow 0,01% sulphur content. These type fuels provide little or no lubrication to metal surfaces so thatcritical components such as fuel pumps are likely to experience seriouswear and premature failure. Furthermore the ignition delay in the boilercan increase the risk of a boiler explosion on board of the vessels.ADERCO L 1050 is a lubricity improvement additive which has beenespecially developed to address friction & wear problems in fuel pumpsand to alleviate excessive operational and maintenance issues whenburning low lubricity distillate fuels.Unlike earlier-generation products that are available on the market,ADERCO L 1050 has been specifically developed to address the uniquetechnical requirements of the marine industry. This additive alsoovercomes certain undesirable properties associated with earlierproducts, such as solubility, stability and incompatibility. Taking all thisinto consideration during the development stage, this has resulted inthe following product features and benefits: Highly concentrated productHelps to protect wear on fuel pumps and injectorsHigh Flash point - no extra storage requiredEasy to transport – no airfreight restrictionsConsidered a non-dangerous, non-hazardous productExcellent mixing and compatibility with gas oilNo tendency to form troublesome gum depositsNo interaction with other fuel additivesJuly 2010

AVERAGE DOSAGE:1 litre per 30 tonnes of fuel.DOSAGE:Aderco L 1050 ranges from 1 litre per 10 tonnes up to 40 tonnesWhy is the dosage rate not fixed?ISO has created a specification for the fuel. According to the results onmeasurement from HFFR, the dosage of the lubricity improver can becalculated. In practical terms, therefore, the scar test and the dosage hasto be calculated accordingly after each bunkering!A new product assisting to deal with the official EmissionRequirementsThe limits applicable in Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECAs) will bereduced to1.0 % effective from 1st July 2010 (from the current 1.5 %; beingfurther reduced to 0.10 % effective from 1st January 2015.).The last change which will have immediate effects from 1st January 2010,is the reduction to 0.10 % of sulphur for those vessels operating in portsof the SECAs area.A new grade of distillate fuel is born. The DMZ is a new grade of distillate fuel. The difference between DMX –DMA and DMZ is the minimum viscosity of 3.000 mm²/S @40 CThis DMZ is made to respect the minimum requirements of enginebuilders at the level of viscosity in Gas Oil.Do not confound viscosity and lubricity which are total different itemswithout any link between the one and the other. For exemple:You can have a high viscosity with a low grade of lubricity and the inverseis possible too: a low viscosity and a high grade of lubricityThe use of ADERCO L 1050 will help you highering the level of lubricityThe both following diagrams are showing the resultsJuly 2010

How is Diesel Fuel evaluated for lubricating properties:Diesel fuel and other fluids are tested for lubricating ability using a devicecalled a “High Frequency Reciprocating Rig” or HFRR. The HFRR iscurrently the internationally accepted, standardized method ISO 12156-1to evaluate fluids for lubricating ability. It uses a ball bearing thatreciprocates or moves back and forth on a metal surface at a very highfrequency during 90 minutes. The machine does this while the ball bearingand metal surface are immersed in the test fluid (in this case, treateddiesel fuel). At the end of the test the ball bearing is examined under amicroscope and the “wear scar” on the ball bearing is measured inmicrons. The larger the wear scar, the poorer the lubricating ability of thefluid. The independent lab runs every sample twice and averages the sizeof the wear scar.TESTS CONDUCTED WITH SGS ANTWERP IN SEPTEMBER 2009HFFR TEST ISO 12156-1 @ 60 C during 90’Max standard following ISO 8217-2010Out of specs sample tested by SGSOut of specs sample after treatment withL1050July 2010

The result is thattoday’s diesel fuel has reduced lubricity.ADERCO L 1050 is an additive speciallyformulated to improve lubricity in ultra lowsulfur diesel fuels. This lubricity is essentialfor proper operation of injection pumps andinjectors in diesel engines.Harmonized Tariff System: 3811.90DOSAGEThe normal dosage for 1 liter of ADERCOL 1050 varies between 10,000 to 50,000litres of fuel depending on the severity of thebase fuel. Some diesel fuel can demandhigher dosage of additive. Please contact .Average dosage: 1 litre per 30 tonnes of fuel.HANDLINGNormal precautions for handling petroleumproducts should be observed :-If skin contact does occur: Washaffected areas with soap and water.-If eye contact does occur: Immediatelywash with copious amounts of cleanwater or an eyewash solution for atleast 10 y very stable and will remain instorage for prolonged periods; typicallyshelf life will be 24 months.
