KODAK PROFESSIONAL T-MAX DevelopersDecember 2017 J-86TECHNICAL DATA / CHEMICALSKODAK PROFESSIONAL T-MAX Developer is amoderately active, liquid black-and-white film developerthat offers enhanced shadow detail in normally processedand push-processed films. The same description applies toKODAK PROFESSIONAL T-MAX RS Developer andReplenisher except that it is a black-and-white filmdeveloper and replenisher. Like T-MAX Developer, T-MAXRS Developer and Replenishler produces higher imagequality (enhanced shadow detail) than currentpush-processing developers when you process filmnormally or push it one, two, or three stops. You can use T-MAX Developer to process roll sizes ofKODAK PROFESSIONAL T-MAX Films and most otherblack-and-white continuous-tone films. Do not use thisdeveloper to process sheet film. You can use T-MAX RSDeveloper and Replenisher to process all roll and sheetsizes of KODAK PROFESSIONAL T-MAX Films, as well asmost other black-and-white continuous-tone films.T-MAX Developer is intended for use in unreplenishedsystems. For replenished systems, use T-MAX RSDeveloper and Replenisher. T-MAX RS Developer andReplenisher is a hydroquinone-based, two-part developerspecially formulated for replenished systems, but you canalso use it in unreplenished systems.T-MAX Developer is available as a one-part concentratein sizes to make one gallon and five gallons of workingsolution. You can easily mix smaller volumes by mixing onepart of the concentrate with four parts water. T-MAX RSDeveloper and Replenisher is available in convenient sizesto make one gallon and ten gallons of solution; use thissolution as a working-tank solution or a replenisher. Theten-gallon size consists of two separate units, each tomake five gallons of solution. 2017 Kodak Alaris Inc.KODAK PROFESSIONAL T-MAX RSDEVELOPER AND REPLENISHERFEATURESBENEFITS Mixed solution used as aworking-tank solution or areplenisher No need for a separatereplenisher solution No starter concentrate required Designed for processingsheets and rolls No need for separate developers Liquid concentrates Easy mixing Buffered solution Less affected by differences inwater supplies Ideal for large tanks andreplenished systems Excellent process uniformity Good shadow detail Good tone reproduction Excellent storagecharacteristics forconcentrate and workingsolution Long solution life Works well with normallyexposed film as well aspushed film One developer for normal andpush processing

REPLENISHMENTSTORAGEAdd 11 2 fluid ounces (45 mL) of solution for each 135-36or 120 roll or 8 x 10-inch sheet (or equivalent) processed.Stir or recirculate the solution thoroughly after eachaddition of replenisher solution. You can store working-strength solution in a full, tightlyclosed bottle for six months, in a half-filled bottle for twomonths, or in a covered tank for one month. You can storethe concentrate for up to two years.Note: Do not use KODAK T-MAX RS Developer andReplenisher to replenish KODAK T- MAX Developer.PROCESSINGPROCESS CONTROLUse KODAK Black-and-White Film Process Control Strips(CAT 180 2990) to monitor the developer activity ofT-MAX 1RS Developer and Replenisher. For moreinformation about using Black-and-White Film ProcessControl Strips, see the instructions packaged with thestrips.2The development times in the following tables are startingpoint recommendations. They are intended to produce acontrast index of 0.60 for KODAK PROFESSIONAL T-MAX400 Film and 0.56 for the other films. These developmenttimes should produce negatives with a contrast suitable forprinting with a diffusion enlarger. To adjust contrast forprinting with a condenser enlarger, reduce thedevelopment time by 20 to 30 percent.KODAK PROFESSIONAL T-MAX Developers J-86

Firmly tap the tank on the top of the work surfaceto dislodge any air bubbles. Provide initial agitation of 5 to 7 inversion cycles in5 seconds, i.e. extend your arm and vigorously twist your wrist 180 degrees asshown below.Then repeat this agitation procedure at 30-second intervals for the rest of the development time.KODAK T-MAX RS Developer and ReplenisherSpeed RatingKODAK FilmT-MAX 100 ProfessionalPROFESSIONAL T-MAX 100T-MAX 400 Professional andPROFESSIONAL T-MAX 400T-MAX P3200 ProfessionalPROFESSIONAL T-MAX P3200PLUS-X PanPLUS-X Pan ProfessionalPROFESSIONAL PLUS-X 125TRI-X PanTRI-X Pan ProfessionalPROFESSIONAL TRI-X 400 Film /400TXDevelopment Time (Minutes)EI18 C(65 F)20 C(68 F)21 C(70 F)22 C(72 F)24 C(75 F)27 C(80 F)29 C(85 NR11 1 2——100/200NR871 276 1 4——1 4400———10——800————11 3 1312119 1 2——512400*—8761 2651 2800—981 271 261 2651 21600—101 291 281 271 161412111025,000*—NRNR16141311400*—981 271 2761 251 2800—101 291 2981 271 261 281 271600—12111091 23200—141 2131211 1 21081 26400—16 1 21513 1 21311 1 21012,500*—181 217151 2141 2131125,000*—NRNR17161 2141 2121 2125/25061 251 241 2†4†31 2†——500NR981 271 26 1 2——1 4†125/250544†31 2†3†——500—7 1 461 265——400/8007651 251 25——91 21600—91 28——3200—12111 2111 211——32054†31 2†31 2†3†——400/80043 4†41 2†41 4†4†31 2†——160081 273 471 463 46——981 471 2——83200—91 2PROFESSIONAL TRI-X 320 Film /320TXP32041 2†4†31 2†31 4†23 4†——VERICHROME Pan125—4†4†31 2†31 2†——*Make tests to determine if results at these ratings are acceptable for your needs.†Development times shorter than 5 minutes may produce unsatisfactory uniformity.KODAK PROFESSIONAL T-MAX Developers J-86NR Not recommendedNote: The development times in bold type aresuggested starting points3

To agitate a sheet of film or a batch of sheet films in hangersin a tank, start the timer. Lower the hangers as a unit carefullyinto the developer. Tap the hangers sharply against the rim ofthe tank two or three times to dislodge air bubbles from thesurface of the film. (Air bubbles can interfere with developmentand produce low-density circles on the film.) Do not agitate thehangers for the remainder of the first minute. Lift all thehangers out of the solution and tilt them almost 90 degrees tothe left. Reimmerse the hangers, lift them out again, and thentilt them almost 90 degrees to the right. Do this as quickly andsmoothly as possible—in about 5 to 7 seconds. After youreimmerse the hangers, check their spacing. Repeat thisagitation cycle once every minute during the developmenttime.MANUAL PROCESSINGLarge-Tank Processing ( 2 to 3 2 -gallon tank)—Rolls11Agitating Rolls in a Large Tank: Agitate continuously for thefirst 15 to 30 seconds by raising and lowering the basket, rack, or spindle 1 cm (1 2 inch). Do not agitate the basket, rack, or spindle for the remainder of the first minute. Thenagitate once per minute by lifting the basket, rack, or spindleout of the developer, tilting it approximately 30 degrees, draining it for 5 to 10 seconds, and reimmersing it. Alternatethe direction of tilting the basket, rack, or spindle.Agitating Sheet Film in a Large Tank: Separate the sheetsby at least 1 cm (1 2 inch). Use a hanger loaded with an8 x 10-inch sheet of acetate or scrap film to avoid unevendevelopment or scratching of the larger sheets. (Thisunevenness is caused by turbulence around the centralframe of the multiple-film hanger during agitation.)Note: When you process films larger than 5 x 7 inches, becareful not to lift them from the solution so quickly that thefilms are pulled from the hangers.KODAK PROFESSIONAL T-MAX RS Developer and ReplenisherSpeed RatingKODAK FilmT-MAX 100 ProfessionalPROFESSIONAL T-MAX 100T-MAX 400 Professional andPROFESSIONAL T-MAX 400T-MAX 3200 ProfessionalPROFESSIONAL T-MAX P3200PLUS-X PanPLUS-X Pan ProfessionalPROFESSIONAL PLUS-X 125TRI-X PanTRI-X Pan ProfessionalPROFESSIONAL TRI-X 400 Film / 400TXDevelopment Time (Minutes)EI20 C(68 F)21 C(70 F)22 C(72 F)24 C(75 F)100/20010987 1 2400NRNRNR111 2100/20083 481 4400———11 1 4400/80081 2871 277160012111093200NRNRNR12400*101 291 281 271 2800111 210981600131 2111 2101 291 232001714 1 213126400NR18161412,500*NRNR1817400*1091 281 2880012101 21091 21600131 2121 2111 2101 23200161 2141 2131 2136400NR1715141 212,500*NRNR171 2161 2125/25087651 2500NRNRNR8125/25043 441 2431 2500NRNRNR53 4400/8001081 271 261 2101 29131 2160014121 23200NRNRNR320651 2400/800516008 3 41 2PROFESSIONAL TRI-X 320 Film / 320TXP3204VERICHROME Pan12551 2*Make tests to determine if results at these ratings are acceptable for your needs.†Development times shorter than 5 minutes may produce unsatisfactory uniformity.473 44451 253 44 1 2487 1 271 433 43 1 454†5NR Not recommendedNote: The development times in bold type are suggestedstarting pointsKODAK PROFESSIONAL T-MAX Developers J-86

QUICK REFERENCE TO PROCESSING FILMSBefore Processing Make sure all hangers and reels are clean and dry before loading film. Handle unprocessed panchromatic film in total darkness. Make sure all solution temperatures are close to the temperature of the developer (within ?1.7 C [?3 F]).
